Good News for those of us looking for a new and stimulating environment to have a cup of coffee, Arcadia House is now officially open.
Arcadia is the creative brain-child of Matt Ceolin. He has been renovating what used to be Yun's Restaurant for two years now. His artistic genius is evident everywhere on the premise...most of the interior has been hand-worked and recycled from items found on site. Take some time to admire the details.
The coffee house is constantly evolving and an exciting place to visit. They serve fair trade and organic certified coffees and teas as well as hot chocolate, italian sodas and hot cider.
Hours are Monday to Friday from 9-6 and Saturday from 12-6. It's located at 823 Queen St East.
Good Eats Gossip
I was out and about on Friday gathering supplies for this week's menu and doing research for future endeavors. There is a real nice vibe happening in this town that I would describe as a sort of progressive food consciousness. New and established businesses are helping people bridge the gap between understanding the need to eat well and the ability to do it for themselves and their families. Earthward Cafe is one which I mentioned earlier and now the Country Way Health Food store is serving a lunch in the form of a vegan soup or stew for $3.99 which you can have to go or eat in at a table by the window. I love having tasty lunches available nearby. I also finally found a brochure for McFadden's Acres which is a farm that I've heard about from various people around town. They have a VIP program to order seasonal vegetables and fruits from next year's harvest (they farm organically and are working towards achieving organic certification). It works by prepaying for the season (if you pay in full by November 30, then you receive a $30.00 discount) which is $300.00 for a small order and $420.00 for a jumbo order...that's for 15 weeks of wonderful, fresh food. For more information e-mail Fannie at fannie_p@hotmail.com or call 705-782-2207.
The response has been super for meal catering, in fact we have almost reached capacity for new and returning orders and I want to thank our customers for their enthusiasm and support. I look forward to growing with the community by providing wholesome, nutrient-rich and tasty meals that are created to enhance the body and mind, in a way that treads lighter on this earth and with respect to the environment.

Good Eats in the Sault
I paid a visit to the Earthward Cafe last week. Steve and Jeanette have been open for about 3 months now and are serving wonderful vegetarian lunches, wheat free and dairy free baking, organic coffee and teas at the Healing Arts Centre in the Sault (426 Bruce St/downstairs). It's a great place to hang out for a while, eat and listen to the jazz which floats around the room. I had my favorite dish, black bean and coconut soup with a biscuit on my visit. Some of this weeks dishes to try are carrot and coriander soup, split pea soup and curried lentil soup with garlic naan and basmati rice salad...that last one is on for this Friday.
Steve and Jeanette have philosophies similar to mine when it comes to food so pay them a visit when you are in the neighbourhood, I know it's been said before but your taste buds will thank you.
In the same visit I went to Nature's Salon and Spa for a cut and found out about a wonderful sounding spa day that's coming up on November 24. Candy organizes them at the Belleview Valley Lodge. Some of the treatments included are organic Aveda seaweed body wraps, hot stone massage, paraffin foot and hand treatments and a sauna. I will be providing lunch and some snacks. If it sounds like something you would be interested in, before the Christmas rush, then give Candy a call at 705-254-3450.
Enjoy the day, Birgit

Here are two articles that show how the more things change the more they stay the same:
This one makes the case for eating real food, not isolated bits of nutrients in the form of supplements. It answers the question "What did we do before one-a-day?
What's your eating philosophy? This article reflects, perhaps, where our society might be heading post-diet mania (Atkins, Zone, Pritikin). How about a new twist on the right vs. wrong way of eating for health and wellness....improve rather than disapprove.
I got a frantic call from my father in Toronto Wednesday morning asking me "Have you heard the news?" Turns out that I was aware of it but had managed to maintain my composure in the meantime. The news item he was referring to was this one from the CBC:
http://www.cbc.ca/health/story/2007/10/31/cancer-study.html
It confirms what we already know 10 times over....taking care of yourself is good for you. The most significant aspect, I found, was the message that lean is healthy, period. That's a difficult message to swallow (pun intended) for most people, even potentially fear inducing (luckily or not, most of us are quite apathetic these days when it comes to the media dictating how we should live our lives).
I have two comments regarding all the hoopla. The first one is that there are many "lean" people who are not exactly the picture of health, internally or externally. There are so many factors that dictate good health, one of the most important of those is the how.... the path we take there must be completely individual; only because we are all so unique. Through all the trial and error, the process must feel good and worthwhile to each one of us.....personally, my best ally has been time and actually taking it or giving it..to myself. That was the way I found out what is best for me.
Secondly, regarding a good place to start. Depending where you are at and what your life looks like (stressed out?) I would suggest ordering the weekly menu from Personal Fit. It is the perfect complement to your regular diet. In one week you could improve your eating habits by up to 50% depending on your energy requirements. For $90.00 per week you could double up and make an even bigger impact. Watch out for our theme weeks: Raw food, Enhancing digestion and the 100 Mile diet. Eat to live and have fun while your doing it.
Have a good weekend, Birgit.
